Does the insurance cover epidemics and pandemics?
Generally, it does not. However, coverage will continue for trip cancellations, trip interruptions and within the scope of travel health insurance in the case of a COVID-19 infection or if another epidemic or pandemic disease has been diagnosed, even if we specified a general exclusion of pandemics and epidemics in our insurance conditions. We have now defined this more clearly in our terms and conditions.

An epidemic is a contagious disease that has been classified as an epidemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) or an official government agency in your country of residence or travel destination.

Definition of personal quarantine
An order by a public authority based on suspicion that you have come into contact with a contagious disease (including an epidemic or pandemic disease such as COVID-19). By quarantine, we mean a prescribed restriction on where you can stay to prevent the spread of a contagious disease.
In the event of a personal quarantine, we will assume the costs within the framework of an existing travel cancellation and / or trip interruption insurance. You are also insured if a personal quarantine is officially ordered, but you, as the insured person(s), are not ill yourself. This applies to cancellations under the trip cancellation insurance as well as in the case that your trip has been interrupted, if you have been ordered to go into quarantine at your destination, causing you to extend your stay. We will also continue to pay for trip cancellations, trip interruptions and within the scope of the travel health insurance in the case COVID-19 or if any other epidemic or pandemic disease is diagnosed, despite the fact that we generally exclude for pandemics and epidemics in our policy conditions.
Which products contain Corona benefits?
All travel insurance contracts from July 1st, 2021 benefit from our extensive Corona services within the scope of travel cancellation, travel interruption and travel health insurance.
Do the new regulations apply to existing insurance policies?

However, the costs of personal quarantine will only be covered for all new policies taken out after June 22, 2021, and for selected travel protection products since September 1, 2020.
Am I insured and will the cancellation costs be covered if, as the policyholder, I get sick with COVID-19 or an illness classified by the WHO as an epidemic / pandemic before departure?
Yes, if you have taken out travel cancellation insurance as the policyholder, you are insured in the event of a pandemic or epidemic.
Are the cancellation costs covered if a co-traveler or co-insured person falls ill with COVID-19 from the time of departure or if there is a suspected case? Is every person listed on the insurance policy insured?
Yes, if a co-insured person traveling with you (= travel companion) falls ill due to COVID-19 or there is a suspected case of COVID-19, then every person listed on your insurance policy is insured. In addition to family members or life partners, we understand travel companions to be other people traveling with you or accompanying you on the trip. However, group and tour guides are not considered to be a travel companions, unless they share a room with you. Teachers accompanying class trips are not considered group or tour guides.
Does insurance coverage exist if a family member who is not co-insured falls ill with COVID-19 before the policyholder's departure?
Yes, if the person falls ill with COVID-19 and the illness or injury is classified as life-threatening by a doctor or requires hospitalization.
Family members are defined as:
- Spouse, domestic partner or cohabitant and their dependents
- Parents and stepparents, children, stepchildren, foster children or children whose adoption proceedings are in progress
- Grandparents and grandchildren
- The following relatives: uncles and aunts, nieces and nephews, mother-in-law, father-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law and grandparents-in-law.
- Guardians and legal custodians, wards and persons under their care
- Paid caregivers living in the same household
Is the suspicion of illness from an illness classified as a pandemic / epidemic before the trip and quarantine as a result an insured reason for withdrawal?
Basically, a suspicion of illness is not insured. However, customers are insured if a personal quarantine is ordered but the insured person is not sick themselve. This applies both to cancellations as part of the travel cancellation insurance as well as to the interruption of the trip if a personal quarantine is arranged at the holiday destination.
Will a prescribed or voluntary corona test be paid for before departure?
No, costs for mandatory or precautionary health tests that are necessary for the start of the journey or the onward journey or the return journey will not be reimbursed.
Are expenses covered if an insured person is refused departure at the airport due to increased body temperature?
Yes, under travel cancellation and delay insurance, we will reimburse expenses if a carrier denies carriage due to suspected contagious disease (including an epidemic or pandemic disease such as COVID-19).
Are cancellation costs covered in the event of loss of work or short-time work due to an epidemic or pandemic?
The loss of a job due to an operational dismissal is generally an insured event, unfortunately short-time work is not.
In the case of a modular booking, one of the services booked is canceled due to an entry restriction, insufficient number of participants (e.g. round trip) or bankruptcy of a service provider (e.g. hotel, airline). Do I get the cancellation costs for the other services back?
No, it is not insured. In this case, the policyholder must contact the service provider directly (travel agency, hotel, tour operator, airline ...).
Is it possible to rebook to travel insurance with the new Corona benefits if you have already taken out travel cancellation insurance?
It is possible to take out a new travel protection with Corona benefits and then ask to cancel the old travel protection. Simply write a short email to email@example.com stating the new and old insurance number. The insurance contribution of the canceled travel cover will then be reimbursed.
